- I stated in my booking I wanted and paid for a room with a double bed for 1 person, but the first room I was shown was a twin bed room. I immediately asked for a room with a double bed, which I was shown into. However, there wasn’t a TV in this bedroom. I never saw the man who checked me in, Ahmed? During the rest if the evening or the next morning. I only realised, when checking the information about Cluny Hill after I’d checked in, there was no Internet available in the bedroom. The bedroom was far too hot and it took me until midnight to get to sleep, when the radiator cooled down. No thermostat control on the radiator. I did, however, manage to get online while sitting in the big lounge on the ground floor. It’s a strange place. Huge with at least 57 rooms as I was in number 57. Several toilets and bathrooms to share but other than a lady who walked past reception while I was sitting in the lounge, I didn’t see or hear anyone else throughout my stay. I’d recommend staying here if you want to be cut-off from everyone and everything. With so few guests apparently staying, why not make the rooms on the ground floor available first? + It was interesting to stay in the old Findhorn building, which is huge and fascinating! The bedroom was clean and tidy and warm and the beds were comfortable. We were also grateful to find a clothes airer in the room as we happened to have bought some wet washing with us that we needed to dry. - We found the check-in process a bit strange and unsettling as the person manning the check in desk, who also showed us to our room did not say one single word to us throughout the whole process. No hello, no word of welcome, no enjoy your stay, nothing. Just silence. We found that weird and a little baffling.. Also, unfortunately, we were woken up in the middle of the night by a very loud group of people who must have been returning from a night out, and who stood right outside our room shouting at each other while they queued for the bathroom. + This place was an absolute genuine surprise! I was looking for a two night stay in budget accommodation while working in the area. I arrived and immediately began to think I was in the wrong place as this looks far from being budget. The hotel is Victorian era being built as a Hydropathic Hotel in 1863. It is a grand mansion like building in the Scottish Barony style and like many other Hydropathic Hotels of that era which are now amongst some of the finest hotels in the country, you could forgive my initial confusion. In fact this place laterally spent years as a college and only reopened this year as a budget hotel. The rooms are typically Victorian, high ceilings with period features while freshly painted and having budget furnishings. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The place was quiet and strangely deserted. Imagine yourself as Jack Nicholson in The Shining at the Overlook Hotel and that is pretty accurate. However for me it was an enjoyable stay and an experience I won't forget. I'll happily stay again.
− Only the lack of facilities let this place down.! There is no breakfast option but that's no big deal and although there is a commercial sized kitchen, there is no access to it like you might get in a hostel or other similar budget accommodation. If you want to eat in then bring food with you and you'll need to consume it in your room. There's a kettle, tea & coffee supplied in each room so a Pot Noodle is about the extent of achieving a hot meal. There is a decent size lounge but it's not really the place to sit and relax as it is devoid of furniture. This place even for budget accommodation could still be so much better but I think it's early days from reopening and I hope things will improve going forward.

+ I was excited to be able to stay once more in this beautiful old house where i had stayed in total 6 weeks in 1985, 1 week in 1986 and a further 2 weeks in 1988 visiting the Findhorn Foundation Community. This hotel is currently in transition, and may not meet everyone's expectation, but we were delighted to see it still so unchanged. The check in was very relaxed and friendly for me and my family. We could explore the building unhindered, as long as we were respectful, which felt like a time warp. Warm, comfy beds, lots of ot water for a bath which my partner enjoyed, and my grandchildren had a ball. You can bring some snacks and have breakfast in the rooms, possibly even in the large old dining room. There is no catering, but kettle, tea and coffee tray. Bathrooms are shared, but there were not many guests, and it felt like having a private one. For five of us much cheaper than a four bed in Edinburgh Youth Hostel. Recommended for All who seek a cheaper alternative and more freedom to B&B, or to all others who would like to once more stay in Cluny Hill Hotel/College, which still features many designs done by the former community. I am curious how it develops. Best of luck and success to the new owners!
− Because there currently still is a real lack of furniture and soft fittings in the rooms and corridors, there is a lot of echo, so it can be a little noisy when people talk, or your partner snores. Carpets in the corridors cushion the walking, which is good, and there is no noise form other rooms. Decor in the new rooms is a little too functional; more wood or carpet and curtains would suit the old style better, but maybe this is just for transition.
