About this property

This 17th-century Basque convent, set on the banks of the River Cadagua, has been carefully converted into a luxury hotel that still retains much of its historic charm.

Surrounded by the beautiful landscape of the Arcentales and Mena valleys, this tranquil rural retreat was originally known as the Monastery of Santa Clara and was originally built in 1666. Nowadays, luxury rooms and comfortable lounge space surround the ancient cloisters. After a relaxing day in the clean air you can return to the hotel restaurant to try some of the traditional Basque cuisine prepared in the kitchen’s oak oven and grill, which can be washed down with some of the best wines northern Spain has to offer.

+ Great place to stay with a friendly and accommodating staff. Would highly recommend a visit to balmaseda and a stay at this hotel, both of which are full of charm and character.

+ Full of character, unique, beautiful building, decent sized room, clean, nice bar, huge bed.
− Supposed to have a kettle, tea/coffee and water in the room but we didn’t. Road noise. Could do with a fan as it got hot. Other than the lady who checked us in, a lot of staff didn’t smile.

+ Overall great place and being a converted convent gives it a unique feel and edge
− Wanted to eat in the restaurant was told earliest 8pm as busy despite being a hotel guest. Turned up 7.45pm to be told no booking and that catering manager wasn't on until 8pm! Then told earliest would be 9pm as had to wait for the wood fired ovens to heat up. Not impressed with the attitude from staff about that either and no where else to find food so had to eat cold from bar
